8 Essential Tips to Keep Your Pet Cool This Summer

As summer temperatures soar, ensuring your pet remains cool and comfortable becomes crucial. Heat can affect pets just as much as it does humans, so taking proactive steps to help your furry friends beat the heat is essential. Here are eight tips to help keep your pet cool and safe this summer:

1. Provide Plenty of Fresh Water
Hydration is key during the summer. Make sure your pet has constant access to fresh, clean water. Consider multiple water stations around your home and shade if outside. Ice cubes in the bowl can also help keep the water cooler for longer. When taking your pet hiking during the warmer months, it’s important to plan ahead to ensure to bring more than enough water for both you and your pet. Consider a collapsible bowl for your pet to drink from easily. Encourage frequent water breaks to keep them hydrated.

2. Create Cool Zones
Set up a cool, comfortable space where your pet can escape the heat. This could be a shaded area in the garden, a cooling mat, or access to rooms with tiled floors or air conditioning.

3. Avoid the Midday Sun
Walk your dogs during the cooler parts of the day. Early in the morning and later in the evening are best, as the pavement will be cooler and less likely to burn their paws.

4. Invest in Cooling Accessories
From cooling vests to cooling mats, several products can help keep your pet cool. These items are particularly useful if you're spending time outdoors or your home doesn’t stay cool during the day.

5. Keep Them Groomed
Regular grooming can help prevent overheating. Dogs with thick fur benefit enormously from a summer trim. However, never shave your dog — the layers of dogs' coats protect them from overheating and sunburn.

6. Monitor for Heatstroke
Know the signs of heatstroke, which include excessive panting, drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, uncoordination, and collapse. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cooler area immediately and contact your veterinarian.

7. Hydrate with Cool Treats
Make some pet-friendly ice treats. Freezing your pet’s favorite snack or making ice pops with suitable ingredients can be a fun and refreshing treat during the hot days.

By implementing these tips, you can help ensure your pet enjoys a safe and cool summer. Remember, if it’s too hot for you, it’s probably too hot for your pet. Always consider your pet’s comfort and safety to prevent the dangers of overheating.
